Why aren't employees allowed to set at the bar and be waited on by bartenders?
The restaurant I work for has a policy and is clearly marked all over the kitchen that employees are not allowed to sit at the bar and be waited on by the bartender(s) on or off duty at any of our locations? Why is this?
I agree that it may be to prevent alcohol from being given away easily, but my first thought was maintaining professional representation. I've known of restaurants/bars not permitting employees to be a patron at all, allowed to if out of uniform, or even allowed to off their shift but with 24 hr-1 week notice. If a customer sees an employee sitting at the bar he/she may wonder if that employee is on or off the clock, businesses may not want their employees fraternizing with customers or with each other, and/or a business may want to uphold a professional appearance which an employee is a representation of such. Any business owner would want to prevent an employee from acting inappropriately with or towards customers, in a social setting especially at a bar where alcohol is involved, this becomes more difficult to control. It could be a combination of all these reasons or reasons unknown, since it really is at the discretion of the business.
